Book club was awesome last night!

We went to Jeni's for a great meal, and discussed the book,

SPEAK

by Laurie Halse Anderson

We all loved the book and had a great discussion on it.

What message was the author trying to relay in this book?

We concluded that it was to SPEAK up when something like that happens.

It will get better as time goes by and if that person has someone to talk to.

Talking about it can make a big difference.

On the other end of the spectrum - be a good listener -

Be aware of others and their challenges & trials they are facing.

Be open and willing to listen and help where needed.

Last night we had our bookclub discussion at Becky's House.

We discussed the book we had just read:

The Screwtape Letters

by C.S. Lewis

We had an interesting discussion about Lewis' religious affiliations. In researching Lewis on the internet,

we found that he is an Athiest.

How interesting -

We talked about how he could be an atheist and yet write so many interesting books that deal with God, Heaven, and the Devil.

We finally came to the conclusion that he is such an intellectual that maybe he just couldn't affiliate with any organized religious sect and he probably dabbled in every Christian religion to understand its philosophies.

Our next book was picked by Jeni - and it's going to be:

"Speak"

by Laurie Halse Anderson

Should be interesting to read since its about date rape and the school district just implemented it

into the 9th-10th grade reading curriculum.

Report from Shari's (April 13th)

Tonight we had a lovely evening at Shari's - discussing the book: Tattoos on the Heart by Gregory Boyle.

We almost had 100% attend - (maybe next time)!!

Anyways, the big question posed by Shari: "Is compassion always the answer".

And the answer from some was - "Sometimes the person who always gives compassion gets taken advantage of".

But, some felt that "YES, it's always good to give compassion to others".

How can you go wrong when you are giving compassion?

Shari treated us to her favorite cake - from the European Bakery in Point Loma - Mmmmm

it was sooooooo yummy!

So, is our book club dead, or what? After much effort, Cathy graciously hosted our event, with delicious cobbler!

Debbie and Lenora made it, with Shari arriving very late! We had fun eating and talking. It just seems more difficult for us all to get it together, and maybe we need some fresh recruits.THANK YOU TO CATHY for keeping our patient alive!

Shari, Lenora, Debbie and I had a good time visiting with each other. We talked just a little about the last book and Shari introduced her book for next time. It is Tattoos On the Heart - The Power of Boundless Compassion by Gregory Boyle. It can be bought at Overstock.com or Half.com for under $15.

From Shari: Father Boyle posits in this book, "what if compassion is always the answer." This has set me to thinking a lot. I want to know what you think.

Report on Karen's Book Club

So, we met at Karen's house Thursday night to review the book, "Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt" by Beth Hoffman." She must have slaved away all day so that we were treated to the BEST Southern food for dinner. It was so good we all were asking for the recipes and she was kind enough to give them to me so I could post them for us all here.

The food was great and we also reviewed the book with interesting questions Karen had come up with. She found many themes within this book; forgiveness, strength of women, and mental illness. We had great conversations and enjoyed being with each other.

Here are the Recipes: THANKS KAREN!!

Pulled Pork Sandwiches (in the Crockpot)

4 lb pork roast (I have also used beef roast)

2 onions, sliced, divided

1 onion, chopped

5 or 6 whole cloves

2 cups water

16 oz bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce

salt and pepper

-Place one sliced onion at the bottom of Crock Pot.

-Stud pork roast with cloves and season with salt and pepper.

-Place roast in slow cooker on top of the sliced onion. Cover with the second sliced onion and add enough water to fill Crock Pot two thirds of the way.

-Cover and cook on low 8 to 12 hours.

-Remove roast. Remove and discard cloves, bone and fat as well as any water, onions and grease remaining in pot.

-When pork roast is cool enough to handle, use a fork or your fingers to pull it apart until the entire roast is shredded.

-Return the pulled pork to the Crockpot. Mix in the chopped onion and BBQ sauce and cover. Heat on high for 1-3 hours or until the onions are soft.

-Serve on large, crusty buns with a mustard based Carolina-style BBQ sauce.

NOTE: This is the original recipe I was given. I have cooked the roast on high (4-6 hrs) instead of low when I was in a hurry and didn't have that long. I have also done it on low and left to heat while we were at church and then it was ready to eat when we got home. I used a BBQ sauce that was very thick the first time and it was pretty dry, so since then I add a little water to it and it turns out perfect.

Corn puff

2 cans cream corn

1/2 can whole corn

4 eggs beaten, fold in

1/4 cup oil

2 teaspoon garlic salt

1 tablespoon minced onion

Small jar pimiento (optional)

Package cornbread mix

DIRECTIONS:

-Mix until no lumps

-Add cup grated cheese, mix in

-Bake on 350 for 40-45 min

Derby pie

1 stick butter

1 C Sugar

½ C flour

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 eggs (beat until light and fluffy)

¾ C chocolate chips

1 C walnuts/ pecans

DIRECTIONS:

-Combine and pour into unbaked 9 inch pie shell

-Bake 40 minutes at 350

Banana Pudding

1 ½ C cold water

14 oz can eagle brand milk

1 3/ 4 package instant vanilla pudding (small box)

2 cups whipping cream (whipped)

1 box vanilla wafers

3-6 bananas sliced

DIRECTIONS:

-Combine eagle brand and water

-Add pudding mix

-Beat until well blended

-Chill 5 mins

-Fold in the already whipped cream

-Layer pudding mixture, vanilla wafers, and bananas in serving bowl

-Repeat layers ending with pudding mixture

-Break up wafers to garnish top

-Chill thoroughly

Note: (after I whip cream I add 3 tablespoons powdered sugar, 3 teaspoons vanilla)

"Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe ~

A great pick by our hostess Lenora who also fed us a sumptuous dinner, drinks, and dessert!!

We were well fed for sure ~

I believe we all enjoyed the evenings dinner as well as the topic of conversation.

We missed DeeDee - we would have had 100% attendance if she were there -

ah well, next time!

Sarah's Key "French Night"

The ambience of France was brought to life thanks to Becky Ford who hosted the book club meeting this month! We enjoyed the beautiful food, music and items that helped us form a glimpse of the culture of the French people. We welcomed our guest Nicole, a French native. She helped prepare the delicious food and brought insight into our discussion of "Sarah's Key".

"Sarah's Key" by Tatiana De Rosnay took our book club on a journey back and forth during the times of WWII and to the present. "Sarah's Key" was mainly set in Paris, France during the Nazi occupation. This fictional story of a young Sarah who happened to be Jewish, brings an unsettling awareness to the reader of the horrors of war and the brutality of the Holocaust.

Our conversations centered around the dark event in history called La Grande Rafle (Main roundup of Jews in France) and in particular the families, many of them small children that were forced into the Vel' d' Hiv'(Velodrome) for many days with no food, water or basic facilities. These French citizens suffered the loss of their property, dignity and loss of life and eventually were sent to their executions. This event was not well known to many of us.

Sarah's admonition to "Never forget" will remain with us all.

"... in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever approaching thunder, which will destroy us too, I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquillity will return again." - Anne Frank

We're looking forward to our next book called "Imperium", the first in Robert Harris' trilogy about Rome and the life of Cicero

We had a great discussion at Karen's house on Thursday August 27th about the book "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan." Karen served chinese food and then we got down to business with questions like, "would we be willing to bind our own child's feet?" It was a really good discussion. We missed those who weren't there to join with us - we hope you read the book - it was a great read!!

Shari Crall then introduced our book for next month.
She started out by asking us what we knew about Columbine.
Some of the things we thought we knew were right, but some weren't - I guess our memories had forgotten alot of the facts or they hadn't gotten them correct in the first place.

"Wild Rose"

We had a great discussion at Nancy's on Thursday evening - we talked about Rose Greenhow and the Civil war spy that she was.

Nancy even shared with us a picture of her husbands great grandfather dressed in his uniform from the civil war and his funeral program from 1920 which was full of information from his life. It was very interesting to read about him because he was not only in the civil war but he was also in the "Battle of Bull Run."

After the discussion we were treated to a wonderful dessert of ice-cream with berries, brownies, and cookies - YUMMY. Thanks Nancy, we had a great time and really enjoyed the discussion, the company, and the treats!!

The Puuurrrfect Night!!!

Last night we had the Puuurrrfect night at DeeDee's house as we discussed "DEWEY the library cat". We were pleasantly surprised to be eating our dinner out of animal dishes. Dee dee had decorated her table with a big cookie jar that looked just like DEWEY and had red yarn on the table, along with several different types of cat food.
We buttered our bread with cat-butter knives (very creative)!
Thanks Dee Dee we all had a lovely evening!!

Last night was book club at Lissa's. The book was "THE SHACK." We had a great dinner and great conversation. The women there were: Lissa, Nancy, Dee Dee, Shari, and Becky. We missed those others who couldn't join us. Debbie, you are next on the list. So, we need you to tell us what book we need to read. And, we came up with possible dates: March 5 or 12th. Just let us know what date is best and what book we need to get.

The Recipe for Lissa's White Bean Chili:
1 Lb Navy Beans
6 cups chicken stock
1/2 bunch cilantro-chopped
3/4 tsp white pepper
pan fry chicken breast chopped up in 2 T olive oil
add in 1 T minced garlic 3/4 c. onion, 1 1/2 c. green chili's,
1 T. cumin, 1 T oregano, 1 T black pepper.
